![]() ![]() In ''Laputa,'' a space battle is apt to create smoke screens in delicate rainbow colors of blue, green and purple. When Sheeta and Pazu reach Laputa, they find a deserted but magificent place, with giant metallic robots, furry fish swimming in an azure underwater city, lush indoor gardens and an underground maze constructed of mysterious, inscribed black cubes. Yet the self-conscious comic-book style of the characters is the film's one nod to conventional animation.ĭrawn in a dazzling range of jeweled but subtle colors, the film is always a joy to watch. Visually, Sheeta and Pazu are extremely stylized, with the wide round eyes and slight, linear features of Saturday-morning cartoon characters. They are after Sheeta's blue amulet, which emits brilliant aquamarine rays and enables her to float safely through the air when she falls from a plane. Here the heroine is an orphan girl named Sheeta, who is chased by evil agents of an unnamed government and by a comic family of air pirates. Though the name Laputa refers to the island that flies through the air in ''Gulliver's Travels,'' the film borrows only the concept of a hovering land of great scientific accomplishment. ''Laputa,'' playing today and tomorrow at Film Forum 2, may have a hard time finding its ideal audience. Yet this two-hour story about a lost princess, a flying island and space pirates is liable to strain the patience of adults and the attention spans of children. Its detailed fantasy world, including a dark turn-of-the-century mining town and candy-colored futuristic space bikes, is as alluring as any live-action film. Part science fiction and part fable, the film is the product of a culture where cartoons and comic books have a huge appeal for adults as well as children. Of course if none of this interests you then it is still worth seeing for Miyazaki's imagination and style, which is impressive and hard to believe that it is 20 years old this year.''Laputa: Castle in the Sky'' is an animated adventure story from Japan that illustrates the extraordinary quality of that country's animation as well as a minor cultural diffrence between Japanese and American audiences. These are grown within a engaging story told with pace and a good rate of action. Overall this may not have the emotional depth of Spirited Away but it has strong characters and good relationships. Everyone works well together and they deliver their characters well to support the narrative and they match the impressive visuals well. Hamill takes the bad guy role well and shows his experience at animation even if he is a little hammy at the odd point. ![]() Just as good is Leachman's Dola blessed with a good character in the first place, her voice is spot on despite sounding a little like Mrs Skinner on the Simpsons. She probably isn't that weak but she is shown up by an engagingly fresh and natural delivery from Van Der Beek not something I expected to be saying when I learnt he was doing the voice of Pazu. Sadly the weakest link is Paquin, she sounds unnatural and a little wooden too often. The voice cast in the English dub are mostly very good. The characters bring out nice relationships as well which adds value to the story but unfortunately points made late in the film about the environment and such are heavily made and clunky. The pace of the film is perfectly pitched and things move forward really well and I can't imagine an audience of children or adults will be bothered by the running time. It struggles at times with the weight of coincidence needed to make the film move forward but the manner of delivery covers up these little problems by producing regular action and fun characters. ![]() As writer he has also done well to craft a story that is engaging and enjoyable. The sheer visual style and imagination is quite breath-taking and I could not quite believe that this was made by Miyazaki only 7 years after the vastly inferior (but still OK) Rupan sansei: Kariosutoro no shiro (or The Castle of Cagliostro as it was in the UK). ![]() Hard to believe that this film is twenty years old and yet looks as fresh and is as engaging as anything else you will see today. Escaping Pazu's town together is only the start of their adventure together. Not only do the pair have to deal with the pirates but also the government, led by sinister agent Muska, have their own dark reasons for getting hold of Sheeta. Pazu takes her in and they become friends but quickly learn that the pirates after Sheeta have not given up their chase. Fortunately the enchanted and mysterious crystal she is wearing round her neck saves her and floats her to the ground where she is found by young Pazu, who is rushing to get back to his boss in the mine with food. When the airship she is on is attacked, Sheeta tries to escape from her would-be captors but falls to her death through the clouds. ![]()

![]() ![]() Wolfenstein’s developers are mostly former Starbreeze Studios veterans, creators of games like The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and The Darkness - games that were nothing if not narrative, and praised for being so. The narrative embellishments are a safer bet. Ultimately the players will have to decide if the '90s touches are an appropriate homage, or dated mechanics. It’s been designed as a first-person shooter, with a deep (for a FPS) narrative and some decided throwbacks to the mid-'90s style of shooter on which it is based. In spite of the fact that it is based off an existing franchise, The New Order represents somewhat of a creative risk for Machine, and for publisher Bethesda Softworks. Mark Blankenship has been trying all year to make you love Emeli Sandé’s music.Labrinth - Beneath Your Beautiful (Official Video) ft. This is the most romantic song of 2012, and easily one of the best songs of the year. It suggests how large a person can loom in your thoughts when you’re falling in love with them. I love that when you see one person singing, you see the other person’s giant image projected behind them. ![]() And the haunting drum-n-piano track, which builds to a perfect, exploding crescendo, intensifies the emotional experience.Īnd don’t forget the music video, which is so simple but so mesmerizing. Labrinth- whom I mostly know as a rapper-is right there with my beloved Emeli in terms of aching vocals. You learn so much about this man who clowns around and acts the fool, but really just wants to be loved. ![]() I heard a boy say, “Please don’t hurt me.” Let’s take a pause to appreciate the writing in Sande’s verse, just to give you a sense of how elegant this song is: ![]() It’s sexy because it’s not really about sex, you know? It’s the kind of plea for intimacy that can lead to sex, since you feel so close to someone if they respond, but this moment is bigger than that. Each asks the other to see “beneath the beautiful” and “beneath the perfect.” In other words, “Can you please let me see the most vulnerable parts of yourself? Because I want to love you.” And in the chorus, they eventually say “take it off now,” which in this context means “take off your armor” but still has echoes of “take off your clothes.” That’s both emotional and sexy. So here’s the deal: A man and woman are desperate to love each other, but they’re both afraid. It’s a perfect mixture of lyrics, vocals, production, and romance. I love pop music because every few months, you get a song like “Beneath Your Beautiful” by Labrinth featuring Emili Sandé. ![]() ![]() ![]() The same cannot be said of the VS1680, which proved that the VS format was viable for serious composition and recording. The VS840 garnered some positive reviews, but it was hugely limited and limiting. Where it scored, however, was in the provision of a built-in Zip drive, although this offered just four minutes of eight-track recording, even without alternative 'takes'. It also suffered from severe limitations when using uncompressed audio. Like the VS880, it was an eight-track system limited to recording just four tracks at a time, and it lacked a number of its larger sibling's more sophisticated features. Alongside the pair of these, the JX305 Groovesynth was derided by purists, but as a modified MC505 in a five-octave keyboard, without the D-Beam but with an additional selection of traditional sounds for playing or sequencing, it appealed to people who wanted to combine orthodox playing and Groove sequencing.īut the most significant developments were to be found in the V-Studio series, which expanded into a range of three distinct products: the VS880 S2 with its external CD writer option, the VS840, and the superb VS1680, which set a new standard for small studio workstations.Īs the name suggests, the VS840 was the baby of the family. The SP808 was a new variation on the Groove idea, combining sampling and recording in a single box designed for remixing, tweaking, warping and triggering phrases for techno music. The MC505 was an enhanced MC303, adding an improved sound engine, and an enhanced library of music patterns, but it was also the first Roland to accept Smart Media storage cards, and the first to boast the new, infrared 'D-Beam' controller that Roland had licensed from Interactive Light. There was, perhaps, more innovation in the shape of the MC505, SP808 and JX305. The MC505 vastly improved on the Groovebox concept introduced with 1996's MC303. Likewise, the SPD20 improved upon 1993's SPD11, the SC880 was an improved GS/GM rackmount, the JP8080 was an enhanced rackmount version of the JP8000, the VG8EX replaced the VG8, and a range of superb digital pianos replaced the previous range of superb digital pianos. It sported new sounds, and some nice touches such as its integrated Zip drive, but at heart it was still a GS/GM 'Arranger' workstation. ![]() Similarly, the G1000 Arranger Workstation was a bigger, better version of the G800. This was nothing more than a smaller version of the XP80. None of these were particularly innovative, although all built in meaningful ways on the company's previous successes.Ĭonsider the XP60, which replaced the XP50 released three years before. If you haven't noticed, the two leg sections that connect Luxo Jr's V-body hinge to his leg V hinge, is this kind of stretched out Z shaped metal bar. Not necessarily because it that hard to make, but just grabbing the specific dimensions for this unique piece was nearly impossible to find. Creating this part of the lamp was easily the most difficult of the project, and the most time I spent on it. I printed it out from my computer, did some basic ratios, and roughly estimated that my lamp would stand at around 1/30th the size standing at 1 foot tall. I found the below image from Flickr and it was perfect, since it gave a nice structured overlay for entire statue. Also, apart from the head, I knew that the rest of his "legs" from my existing anglepoise lamp could be cut down to scale, in order to fit my needs. In order to make my lamp as film accurate as possible, I ended up doing a lot of research into Luxo Jr's specific dimensions and size. The diameter of the head will always be used as the common denominator, when calculating the various size ratios.įor reference, The ratio from Head diameter to Body and Leg rods~ 5 in/ 3.15in For instance, the circumference of my lamp's head was 5'', so each of the connecting rods were around 3''.
